Leadership alignment around mission & priorities
Client context
Family Promise of the Coastal Empire is a mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to supporting families experiencing homelessness and housing instability.
The Good Life Brand partnered with the organization’s Executive Director and Board of Directors to facilitate a full-day leadership retreat focused on strengthening board engagement, clarifying responsibilities, and aligning leadership around the organization’s mission and priorities.
The challenge
Family Promise was navigating a period of board transition. Approximately half of its board members were new, while others had become less engaged in the organization’s work.
Board responsibilities were not consistently understood, meetings lacked a reliable rhythm, and fundraising ownership was uneven. With a major fundraising gala approaching in six weeks, the organization needed its board to move beyond participation and take greater collective responsibility for its success.
The challenge was not a lack of commitment to the mission. It was creating the clarity, connection, and accountability needed to translate that commitment into coordinated action.
The approach
The Good Life Brand designed and facilitated a full-day board leadership retreat that combined reflection, experiential learning, strategic discussion, and practical planning.
The engagement focused on four areas:
- Reconnecting to purpose: Creating space for board members to reflect on the organization’s mission, their individual motivations for serving, and the collective impact they wanted to achieve.
- Clarifying leadership responsibilities: Establishing shared expectations around governance, fundraising, ambassadorship, and the partnership between the board and executive director.
- Strengthening engagement and collaboration: Facilitating conversations and experiential activities that helped board members build relationships, recognize their collective strengths, and develop a greater sense of shared responsibility.
- Moving from alignment to action: Translating discussions into priorities, fundraising commitments, gala planning, and a more consistent meeting and accountability structure.
The retreat was designed to move beyond inspiration, equipping the board with practical commitments they could carry into their ongoing work.
The outcome
By the conclusion of the retreat, Family Promise’s board had established greater clarity around its responsibilities, renewed engagement with the mission, and a more coordinated approach to its immediate priorities.
Key outcomes included:
- Clearer expectations for individual and collective board responsibilities.
- Agreed priorities and actionable next steps for the upcoming fundraising gala.
- A commitment to a more regular board meeting cadence and stronger accountability.
- Greater alignment, connection, and engagement among board members.
The retreat also produced an immediate financial result: A facilitated fundraising activity generated donations equal to the organization’s full investment in the engagement.
The board left with renewed energy, clearer direction, and practical commitments to support the organization’s mission.
In their words
“She was exceptionally well-prepared, thoughtful, and intentional in every aspect of the retreat. Her ability to foster meaningful conversations while keeping the group focused on leadership, collaboration, and purpose made a lasting impact. We left with a stronger sense of unity, clearer direction, and renewed energy for the work ahead.”
Key takeaway
A committed board is not automatically an effective board.
When expectations are unclear and accountability is inconsistent, even well-intentioned leaders can struggle to move an organization’s priorities forward.
Intentional leadership alignment creates the conditions for stronger engagement, shared ownership, and more effective execution. The value of a leadership retreat is not simply bringing people together. It is helping them leave with greater clarity about what needs to happen, who is responsible, and how they will move forward.
